A makeup artist price list should help the client understand what she is buying and help the professional check whether the service is sustainable. It is not a collection of numbers copied from nearby businesses. It translates consultation, preparation, application, products, hygiene, travel, responsibility and hidden working time into an offer that can be read before a booking is confirmed.

Short answer: separate standard services, packages, bridal trial, travel and measurable surcharges. For every line state the result, what is included, indicative duration, location boundary and total price or calculation method. The price list presents the standard offer; the quote adapts it to one assignment; the contract records scope, payment, changes and cancellation.

This Italy-focused guide owns price-list architecture and service-price calculation. It does not own earnings, personal tax, VAT setup or contract drafting. Use the 2026 makeup artist earnings report for capacity and operating result, the Italy business setup guide for VAT and invoicing boundaries, and the quote, deposit and cancellation guide for agreement terms. What a useful makeup price list must do

  • Orient the client: distinguish day, evening, occasion, bridal, personal lesson and production work without specialist jargon.

  • Define the standard service: say what is included, where it is delivered and which variables require a tailored quote.

  • Protect capacity: make travel, waiting, early calls, additional people, assistants and overtime visible before the diary is blocked.

  • Simplify enquiries: answer recurring questions once and collect only the details that change the assignment.

  • Create a measurement baseline: compare the amount collected with complete hours, direct cost and contribution after delivery.

A vague page produces endless messages; an exhaustive public spreadsheet feels like internal administration. Use two levels. The public price list contains understandable services, inclusions and important variables. A private costing sheet contains consumption, complete minutes, fixed-cost allocation, minimum sustainable value and review notes.

Price list, quote, contract and costing sheet are different

Four documents answer four different questions

Presentation, calculation, agreement and measurement stay coordinated

List

Quote

What this assignment costs

Contract

How it is confirmed and managed

Costing

Time, cost, floor and review

Use the public list to orient, the quote to calculate, the contract to confirm and the private sheet to review.

Document

Purpose

Moment

Public price list

Presents standard services, inclusions, prices or calculation criteria

Discovery and first enquiry

Quote

Prices one real brief, location, timetable, people and extras

After collecting assignment data

Contract or confirmation

Records scope, payment, variations, cancellation and responsibilities

Before reserving the date

Internal costing sheet

Holds time, costs, capacity assumptions and review thresholds

Calculation and periodic review

Keep the four documents coordinated without copying every clause into every place. A public line may say that travel beyond a defined area is quoted separately. The quote calculates that journey. The confirmation records the agreed total, date and scope. The internal sheet verifies whether the rule covered the real cost and time.

Build the offer around four families

A readable offer has four separate families

The service describes the result; logistics and extras describe changing conditions

Services

Day, evening, occasion and lesson

Packages

Bridal, group and production brief

Logistics

Travel, waiting and assistant

Surcharges

Time bands, people and overtime

Keep standard work, packages, travel and measurable surcharges separate so the client can understand the total.
  1. Individual services: day, evening, occasion, personal photo session, consultation or lesson.

  2. Packages: bridal, group, production or a defined consultation pathway.

  3. Logistics: travel, parking, tolls, accommodation, waiting and assistant.

  4. Surcharges: early or night calls, public holidays, additional looks, people and authorised overtime.

Do not multiply names for commercially identical work. Separate day and occasion makeup only when preparation, complete time, products, longevity requirement or responsibility genuinely differ. If the same process merely receives a fashionable label, one clear service with options is easier to compare and maintain.

Likewise, do not bury the core professional standard inside optional extras. Clean application, safe transfer of product and the materials needed to deliver the promised base result belong to the service. Optional lashes, a take-home touch-up kit or a second look can be distinct only when the client can understand and choose them in advance.

Calculate a standard service from complete inputs

Price begins with internal evidence

Complete time and operating cost matter before market positioning

1

Measure products and disposables

2

Count the complete assignment time

3

Allocate operating costs consistently

4

Test contribution and capacity

Replace every teaching assumption with measured inputs, then test the result against capacity and demand.

A useful management formula is direct costs + value of complete working time + a defensible share of operating costs + a margin for continuity and risk. It is not a tax formula and it cannot produce a universal Italian rate. Its purpose is to expose assumptions before market positioning is considered.

Component

What belongs here

Useful measure

Direct cost

Consumed formula, disposables, lashes, payment fee and assignment travel

Measured average per service type

Complete time

Enquiry, preparation, travel, setup, application, reset and administration

Real hours × operating-hour target

Operating cost

Space, cover, software, advice, education, promotion and kit renewal

Consistent share per service or available hour

Continuity margin

Quiet periods, failed stock, rework, investment and commercial risk

Tested result, not an arbitrary percentage

Teaching example: an occasion service uses 15 minutes of communication, 25 of preparation, 60 of application and 20 of reset—two complete hours before travel. If direct cost is €8, allocated operating cost €18 and the pre-contribution operating-hour target €28, the starting calculation is €82: €8 + €18 + €56. This is not a recommended price or a market average. Replace every input, test demand and check public obligations separately.

After delivery compare planned and actual inputs. If the service regularly needs 40 extra minutes, correct the process, scope or price. Do not improve the spreadsheet by omitting consultations, cleaning or product replacement. A number is sustainable only when the complete professional standard can be delivered inside it.

Use an architecture the client can scan

Line

State separately

Day makeup

Location, indicative duration and lashes

Evening or occasion

More defined look and stated wear objective

Lashes, touch-up, change and travel

Bridal trial

Number of looks, session length, location and second trial

Wedding day

This table demonstrates wording, not prices. A compact public card can show service name, intended outcome, core inclusions, base location and price. Link to a short explanation of the variables that trigger a quote. Use one authoritative dated page, not conflicting screenshots across old social posts.

Treat the bridal trial as real professional work

A trial may be sold separately or built into a package. Both structures can be clear if the work never becomes invisible. State the number and approximate length of sessions, number of looks or major revisions, location, reference photographs, record of products and cost of an additional trial. If it is separate, explain whether a later package changes the amount due.

A trial is not a free sample. It includes consultation, observation, preparation, application, decisions, documentation and reset. Use the professional bridal makeup protocol to define the technical sequence and touch-up handover. The price list then communicates which portion of that sequence belongs to the selected package.

Price travel as time, vehicle use and lost capacity

Professional makeup artist organises a protected kit for an off-site bridal assignment
Travel includes complete time, transport cost and diary capacity unavailable to other clients

Travel is more than fuel. It may include driving time, vehicle operation, parking, tolls, restricted zones, loading, waiting, public transport, luggage, accommodation and capacity that cannot be sold to another client. Choose a method that matches the actual pattern and explain it before confirmation.

  • Included area: a named radius or zone already covered by the base service.

  • Distance rule: a stated rate and whether the calculation covers the return journey.

  • Geographic bands: city, province and beyond, with a tailored quote after a threshold.

  • Time component: useful where congestion makes similar distances consume very different capacity.

  • Out-of-pocket cost: parking, tolls, train, flight, luggage and accommodation quoted or documented.

ACI kilometre-cost information can help an Italian professional estimate the operating cost of a specific vehicle, including more than fuel. It does not prescribe the commercial amount charged to a client. The public rule should say where the journey starts, whether return distance is included and how live expenses are handled.

Groups and production days need a capacity calculation

A group assignment is not always the individual price multiplied by the number of faces. Timetable design, workstation setup, assistants, disposable use, touch-ups and delay risk change together. Collect the ready-by time, address, number of people, required looks, hair coordination and available space before calculating. Then determine how many services one artist can deliver without reducing hygiene, consultation or finish.

If the timetable requires an assistant, the assistant is a resource needed to meet the brief, not a penalty. State who coordinates the team, what each professional provides and when a change in people triggers a revised quote. One late addition may change call time, travel and staffing rather than merely use more product.

For production, choose an intelligible unit: look, half day, full day or assignment. Define included hours, break, continuity, touch-ups, look changes, kit, assistant, travel and overtime. A preparation-only call that releases the artist is economically different from continuous set attendance, even if the initial makeup is identical.

Publish a simple list and keep a detailed internal sheet

Makeup artist records complete service time and product use after a professional appointment
The internal costing sheet turns real service data into the next price review

For each public service show a comprehensible name, intended result, main inclusions, fixed price or genuine starting price, base location and the variables that require a quote. Do not publish supplier cost, private margin target or operational formulas: these do not help the client choose. Do publish information needed to understand the amount due.

The private sheet can hold expected and actual minutes, direct consumption, allocated operating cost, sustainable floor, published price, authorised discount boundary and review trigger. Note exceptions after delivery: traffic, incomplete brief, additional person, skin-preparation need, waiting or material change. Evidence prevents a single unusual service from distorting every price.

Keep version history. Date the public list and archive the file referenced by a quote. An update should not silently rewrite an assignment already confirmed. The current website, saved quote and confirmation must tell the same commercial story.

An extra discovered after delivery is not transparent. EU consumer information requires clear, correct and understandable pre-contract information, including the total price with applicable taxes and charges. When the exact total cannot reasonably be calculated in advance, communicate the method and the possible additional category rather than hiding it behind small print.

Present prices without devaluing or overselling the service

  • Use plain service names and one sentence on the included result.

  • Use from only when a real variable changes the price, and name that variable.

  • Separate standard services from assignments that genuinely need a brief.

  • Do not turn essential hygiene, preparation or core product into surprise add-ons.

  • Show currency and make the amount payable by a consumer understandable.

  • Display a review date and keep social, website and document versions aligned.

A credible makeup artist portfolio connects each service to representative evidence. The guide to finding makeup clients helps align channel, request and offer. Conversion is clearer when the service name, images, price boundary and intended client describe the same work.

Discounts and packages must preserve the calculation

A discount cannot repair a price that was never costed. Define the objective, period, eligible service, capacity limit and measured result. A package may reduce acquisition or travel cost, but it must list what is included and retain adequate contribution. Avoid inflated reference prices or permanent urgency that makes the normal price meaningless.

A deposit or advance payment is a confirmation mechanism, not a hidden service line. Italian legal and tax effects depend on the term and context; do not use caparra and acconto as casual synonyms. Keep that decision inside the tailored contract and accounting advice, then present only the agreed payment schedule to the client.

Review the list from real delivery data

Monitor complete time, direct cost, quote conversion, cancellation and contribution monthly. Conduct a formal price-list review at least annually and whenever the service, kit, location, travel pattern or operating structure changes materially. Keep confirmed bookings under their agreed conditions unless both parties accept a documented variation.

Do not apply one percentage increase to unrelated services without checking the cause. A travel-heavy bridal package, a local evening service and a production day use different capacity. Update the input that changed, test the new total and recheck the positioning of that service.

Checklist before publishing a makeup price list

  1. Does every line describe a distinct service in words a client understands?

  2. Are core inclusions, base location and indicative duration clear?

  3. Do trial, travel, extra people, waiting and overtime have visible rules?

  4. Does the price cover complete time, direct cost and operating cost?

  5. Can a consumer know the total or calculation method before confirming?

  6. Do price list, quote and confirmation use the same names and boundaries?

  7. Are date, version, currency and contact details current?

Frequently asked questions about makeup artist price lists

How do I create a makeup artist price list?

List services actually offered, measure complete time and direct cost, allocate operating cost, define inclusions and price the variables that change the assignment. Test the result against capacity and demand without copying isolated competitor numbers.

How much should a makeup artist charge in Italy?

There is no single national price. Service, time, products, location, experience, demand, operating structure and tax status differ. Calculate the individual service and communicate the total or method before confirmation.

Should a bridal makeup trial be free?

A trial is professional work. It can be priced separately or included in a package, but state sessions, length, location, looks and the rule for an additional trial.

How should a makeup artist calculate travel?

Use an included zone, distance band, kilometre rule, time component or a combination with live costs. State the starting point, return journey, parking, tolls and accommodation rule.

Can I charge for an early call or public holiday?

A service can be structured around defined availability, but communicate the applicable time band, amount and resulting total before the booking is confirmed.

Should false lashes and a touch-up kit be included?

That is an offer decision. Say whether each is included, optional or available only for named services. The client should not discover its price after application.

Is it better to publish prices or say quote on request?

Publish clear prices for standardisable work. Use a quote when people, brief, location, time or usage materially changes the job, and explain the variables that determine the total.

What is the difference between a price list and a quote?

The price list presents the standard offer. The quote applies it to one assignment and records quantity, date, location, people, calculated extras and total.

Should consumer prices include VAT and additional costs?

EU consumer information requires the total price with applicable taxes and charges to be clear. Where a variable cannot be calculated in advance, state the method and possible charge. Obtain advice for the correct display under your regime.

How often should a makeup price list be updated?

Monitor inputs monthly and perform a formal review at least annually or after a material change in cost, kit, location, travel or service structure. Keep a date and version.

How do I price an additional person?

Measure service time, products, coordination and timetable impact. If volume requires another artist or workstation, include that resource in the quote rather than absorbing it.

How should prices be shared on social media?

Maintain one current, dated page or document and link to it. Avoid undated story images that omit scope, location and calculation criteria.

Do discounts help a makeup artist find clients?

Only when the purpose, capacity and contribution are understood. Measure acquisition and repeat behaviour, avoid artificial reference prices and publish the real duration and conditions.
