Begin with the client seated, head neutral and gaze relaxed. Look straight on and slightly from each side. Note apparent axis, visible opening, lid fold, mobile-lid space, relationship to the brow, the position of both corners and differences between the eyes. A standardised frontal photograph can support the record, but live observation remains primary.

Labels such as round, elongated, hooded, upturned or downturned can help communication, yet rarely describe the whole design. An eye can appear elongated while having a deep fold; its outer corner may sit high while the natural lashes point down. Mapping should combine these variables instead of selecting one box in an effect chart.

The pre-treatment consultation gathers expectations, previous work, maintenance, products and reported reactions. Pain, significant redness, swelling, discharge, injured skin, visual change or unexplained symptoms require postponement and appropriate healthcare input. A lighter map does not make a symptomatic eye suitable.

Read eye-shape references without rigid labels

Useful references include inner and outer corners, the pupil in a neutral gaze, the highest point of the visible eye line, lid fold and available lid space. They do not automatically become section boundaries. They help predict where extra projection might open or lengthen the appearance, add weight or break continuity.

An apparent eye axis can be imagined between the corners, but head tilt, gaze, focal length and perspective alter perception. Research on periocular perception shows that rotation can change judgements about eyelid height and contour. Observe from a repeatable distance with neutral head position and even light; do not build a technical map from a tilted selfie.

Visible mobile lid and fold affect how a curl or length projects from the front. On a hooded lid, the nominal high point may disappear or create an unintended shadow; on an open lid, the same fibre can look shorter. The answer is not automatically more millimetres or a stronger curl. Test real projection while keeping load and contact compatible.

The brow is not a ruler for extension mapping, but it forms part of the visible context. A high arch, short tail or difference between sides can alter how the set is perceived. Describe the intended balance without promising anatomical symmetry or framing normal facial variation as something that needs correction.

Natural-lash direction and the direction of the set

Direction is checked both at the attachment and through space. Natural lashes may grow straight, angled, descending, crossed or in several layers. Placing the same extension orientation on all of them will not produce one uniform result. Separate the desired tip direction from compatible contact and never twist a natural lash to obey the drawing.

Inner lashes are often shorter, finer and less predictable. Excess length or a forceful outward direction can create a rigid start, enter the nasal space or lose order during grow-out. Build the transition gradually and leave unsuitable candidates untreated rather than filling every space to achieve a percentage.

At the outer corner, elongation does not mean pushing every tip downwards or beyond the eye. A sparse or descending base can make a long tail appear heavy and lose shape quickly. Move the maximum earlier, reduce length or leverage, change to a compatible profile or close the transition before the final natural lash.

Inspect from the front, above and the side. A top line that seems even overhead can reveal crossing tips frontally; parallel tips from the front may leave diverging bases. Multi-view control improves the map, but it never compensates for incomplete isolation, inconsistent distance or poor adhesive control.

Different natural bases can require different zone adaptations to create a coherent visible result.

Two eyes are not mirror copies. Opening, fold, corner position, natural-lash direction, distribution and brow can differ. The aim is not identical numbers on both pads; it is a visually balanced result built on different real bases. Two slightly different maps can look more coherent than one perfectly duplicated sequence.

Record references with the client seated and head neutral, then check them again lying down because position and gravity can change visible tissue relationships. Mark meaningful open-eye references before transferring them carefully to pads. Compare high points and boundaries during application rather than discovering a mismatch only when the set is complete.

Do not chase every difference with extra length. A change that balances one frontal view can exaggerate asymmetry in profile or overload the finer side. Use small, documented adjustments to high point, transition, direction or texture. Save the reason and result in the lash client record.

Make comparison photographs repeatable: same light, distance, camera height, expression and orientation. Portrait mode, filters, wide-angle lenses and a tilted phone can distort corners. Consent should distinguish technical records from teaching, portfolio and advertising; a treatment photograph does not automatically authorise social publication.

Cat eye: lateral elongation without a heavy tail

Cat eye develops a progression toward the outer area to increase the perception of elongation. The last zone does not have to be longest. A sustainable version can reach its maximum before the corner and shorten over the final lashes, particularly when the natural tail is sparse, descending or short.

The family can be adapted to many eyes when direction remains controlled and transitions are coherent, but a long tail may weigh visually on a downturned corner or a lid that covers the outer area. Move the elongation earlier, reduce leverage, use compatible projection or consider a squirrel silhouette. The label itself never decides suitability.

Common errors include jumping quickly through lengths, directing tips toward the temple without controlling their bases, making the last natural lash an obligatory boundary and using longer fibres to hide gaps. Judge whether the tail remains readable after some natural lashes shed, not only in the immediate photograph.

Doll eye and open eye: central projection and naming differences

Doll eye and open eye often describe maps whose maximum projection sits centrally or around the pupil reference, followed by reduction toward both corners. Some schools use doll for a rounder, more even shape and open eye for a more calibrated transition; others treat them as synonyms. One guide is appropriate because the names are not universal separate methods.

The high point does not belong automatically at the geometric centre. Mark it in a neutral gaze, then adapt it to eyelid, natural candidates and the agreed effect. Moving it slightly can balance a visible difference or avoid a fragile zone; moving it substantially changes the silhouette and should be discussed with the client.

Central projection can increase the impression of openness, but it may make an already round eye feel rounder than requested, while a deep fold can hide the maximum or add shadow. Work with real projection, curl, direction and transition rather than assuming that more length creates more openness.

Squirrel mapping: a controlled rise and fall before the corner

A squirrel map rises from the inner area to a high point usually positioned beyond the centre but before the outer corner, then descends into the tail. It can create elongation without placing the maximum on the last natural lashes. Exact position comes from open-eye references and available candidates, not a universal percentage.

The final descent should be gradual and intentional. Too abrupt a fall creates a step; too little reduction can turn the design into a cat eye; an unsupported peak creates a spike. Inspect from the front and above to confirm that the written transition follows the eye rather than only looking neat on the pad.

Squirrel is not an automatic correction for downturned eyes. It may lighten the visible tail, but incompatible curls, fine candidates or strongly variable directions still require adaptation. Explain alternatives and limits without promising a permanent lift or anatomical transformation.

Wispy describes intentional variation, commonly created with longer points or spikes above a base line. It is texture, not an eye shape or a complete map. It can overlay cat eye, doll/open eye or squirrel. Treating wispy as one universal standalone recipe would separate two design levels that must work together.

Plan the base silhouette and the spike pattern separately. Define spike position, frequency, relative difference, direction and expected behaviour at infill. Do not scatter longer fibres randomly or exceed a suitable load. The rhythm should remain intelligible when some natural lashes shed.

In hybrid work, classic elements can create definition while fans provide continuity, but alternating one and one does not automatically create wispy texture. A fair comparison uses standardised photographs of the same eye and product system. Images of different clients cannot prove that one map is superior. Explain which visual elements can be pursued and which depend on natural density, eyelid structure, fibre specifications or photographic styling.

Mapping classic, hybrid and volume sets

In classic work, mapping controls the position and direction of individual extensions, and the top line closely reflects natural distribution. Gaps and growth stages remain visible; they should not be hidden with thicker or longer fibres. Clean one-to-one isolation and attachment remain prerequisites for every visual effect.

In hybrid, add the function of classic fibres and fans: definition, coverage, texture or continuity. A numerical ratio does not explain their location or how the set will shed. Each element needs a suitable receiving lash, and increased density cannot repair a poorly planned transition.

In volume, fan opening, mass, base and direction influence the silhouette. A fuller line can soften small length steps, yet it also magnifies tips outside the plan and irregular upper lines. Mega-volume has advanced prerequisites and is not a shortcut for making every mapping request possible.

Do not transfer the same number sequence automatically between classic, hybrid and volume or across fibre ranges. Projection, mass and optical density change. Redesign and record the construction when the technique changes rather than replacing fibres while leaving the old diagram untouched.

Curls, lengths and transitions inside the map

A curl is not an effect; it changes geometry, projection and contact. The same letter can describe different profiles between suppliers, so there is no universal cat-eye curl. Compare the exact fibre with the natural direction and intended shape while retaining a controllable attachment.

Length is a fibre measurement, not final visible height. Curl, placement and eyelid change projection. A map rises and falls through transitions, but individual candidates can receive adapted lengths. The number written in a zone does not obligate the practitioner to use it on every natural lash.

Mixing curls can support a silhouette when the change is purposeful and verified. Abrupt substitutions create steps or conflicting directions. Overlap transitions according to the taught method and record the exact profile and range so the result can be interpreted at infill.

Mapping and sustainability cannot be separated. Do not compensate for a weak outer area with a short but disproportionately heavy fibre or for a hooded lid with length outside competence. As natural lashes grow, attachments move from the eyelid and leverage and direction change. Physiological shedding creates different gaps by zone. Spikes can lose rhythm and a long tail can become discontinuous. Infill is not filling every gap; it is reassessing the design and professionally removing or managing grown-out work.

Compare the original photograph, written map, retention by zone, cleanliness, comfort and reported maintenance. If the effect has not worn well, examine construction, direction, adhesive, environment, fibre choice and natural growth before blaming the client. Reduction, a different transition or simpler texture may be the appropriate change.

A documented map makes infill repeatable without becoming rigid. Record modifications and outcomes under the agreed privacy settings. If new symptoms or unexplained changes appear, stop and apply the consultation criteria; the eye area takes priority over restoring the design.
