In everyday colour-analysis language, undertone usually means the person’s warm–cool direction. Operationally, it is more accurate to say that draping compares the face beside relatively warm and cool colours. The process does not directly measure an invisible pigment beneath the skin. It observes a response under stated light and with stated materials.
A temperature pair should keep value and chroma reasonably close. A medium coral and a medium blue can start a comparison, but one pair is not a verdict. Follow with more controlled families: olive versus blue-green, warm cream versus cool white, golden brown versus rose brown. If every warm drape is pale and matte while every cool drape is deep and glossy, temperature has been confounded with value, chroma and surface.
Record changes in visible colour balance, facial outline, under-eye and around-mouth shadows, and the relative presence of eyes, brows and lips. Do not treat vein colour, ability to tan, gold versus silver jewellery or natural hair colour as proof. Each may generate a hypothesis; only balanced, repeated comparisons can strengthen or weaken it.
Temperature is relative to the compared sample. A red may be warmer than another red yet cooler than an orange; a neutral may lean slightly warm beside one cloth and balanced beside another. Avoid language that turns people into absolute warm or cool objects. The useful question is which range of colour directions supports the agreed visual goal.
Value: reading light, medium and deep colour
Value describes relative lightness: how light or deep a colour appears. To explore it, compare related hues with similar temperature, chroma and surface. A powder blue and a navy are not perfect scientific controls, but a well-designed drape set can minimise the other differences enough to show whether the useful range sits lighter, deeper or through the middle.
A very light fabric may appear detached from the face, reduce feature presence or require additional contrast. A very deep fabric may create a dominant border or make existing shadows the first thing noticed. Neither response is universally bad. Area, material, neckline, surrounding colours and the person’s brief determine whether the effect is useful. The aim is a working range, not the single lightest or darkest possible chip.
Do not infer palette value from skin depth alone. A person with deep skin is not restricted to deep colours, and light skin is not confined to pastels. The drape set must genuinely represent the available range. Testing a deep complexion only with pale muted cloths makes the method incapable of revealing strong deep or brilliant alternatives; the bias sits in the materials, not in the client.

Chroma describes the colourfulness of an object colour relative to a similarly illuminated white. In informal image-consulting vocabulary, people may say intensity, saturation, brightness, clarity or softness. Those words are not interchangeable in colour science. A responsible guide states the practical convention: here, chroma is the clearer-to-more-muted relationship tested between otherwise comparable drapes.
A highly chromatic colour can arrive before the face, make brows and lips seem quieter or demand stronger styling than the client wants. A very muted colour can remove needed definition or make the whole combination seem indistinct. The target is not the loudest or most discreet colour. It is the usable range in which colour and person remain in a deliberate hierarchy.

Material changes perceived chroma. Satin, velvet, matte knit and transparent chiffon reflect or transmit light differently even when the nominal hue is similar. Keep test surfaces comparable, then use material creatively in real life. A very clear colour may become easier in a smaller area or matte texture; a soft colour may gain structure through a crisp edge or higher-value contrast.

Contrast requires at least two elements. It may be a light–dark distance, a colour–neutral relationship, two distinct hues, a difference in chroma or the proportion between large and small areas. Around the face, analysts observe relationships among skin, hair, brows, iris, sclera and lips. In clothing, contrast is constructed through layers, prints, borders, accessories and the size of each colour area.
Dark hair against light skin can create high value contrast, but that does not automatically specify chromatic contrast or ideal chroma. Dyed hair, altered brows, glasses, facial hair and makeup change the practical design. Test contrast with compositions: two nearby neutrals, a sharp light–dark pair, colour against neutral and two more distant hues while holding the other dimensions as steadily as possible.
Observe whether the combination adds structure or fragments the person, whether the face remains the intended focal point and whether the border scale fits the features and brief. Contrast can be adjusted without banning a colour: narrow the light–dark distance, change the proportions, add a bridge colour, soften the surface or move the strongest edge farther from the face.

Why the four dimensions are easy to confuse
Real colours move along several dimensions at once. Lemon yellow can appear lighter and clearer than forest green. Burgundy can be deep, relatively cool and muted. Beige can be warm, light and low in chroma. If a client prefers burgundy, the response may come from depth, temperature, softness, familiarity, symbolism or taste. The protocol needs to decompose those possibilities.
Dimensions also interact. A weak temperature preference may become clearer only within the right value range. A very high-chroma pair may make its temperature difference harder to read. Strong contrast can make a colour work inside an outfit even when the isolated swatch seemed quiet. After isolating the dimensions, the analyst returns to combined tests to check whether the proposed palette works as a system.
Preference and expectation create another layer. A familiar uniform colour may feel ‘right’ before any visual effect is described. A fashionable seasonal label may influence both client and analyst. Ask first what changed visibly, then how the client feels about the effect. Both matter to the final design, but they are different data.

Which dimension should be tested first?
There is no universal order shared by every seasonal or tonal system. Some protocols begin with temperature; others screen value or chroma to find the most selective direction. The four dimensions must be applied without stereotypes. Deep skin can be relatively warm, cool or balanced, can support different chroma levels and can show low, medium or high contrast. Olive appearance does not assign a season or guarantee a cool direction. When a set lacks sufficiently deep, clear or nuanced cool and warm options, its result is structurally biased.
Colour is not distributed uniformly across every face. Visible pigmentation, flushing, freckles, vitiligo, facial hair, grey hair and differences between face and neck may influence the overall relationship without authorising diagnosis. The light source, its distribution, coloured surroundings and visual adaptation all change the appearance of samples. Value and contrast are particularly vulnerable to exposure and shadow; temperature and chroma shift with white balance, processing and device gamut.
