Light should be even across the face, stable throughout the comparison and free from an obvious coloured cast. Avoid mixing a window, a warm ceiling lamp, coloured spotlights and a bright monitor. Check both sides of the face, the area under the chin and the background. When daylight changes rapidly because of cloud, hour or weather, pause the series or move to a controlled source rather than pretending the observations remain comparable.

CIE standard illuminants D50 and D65 describe spectral power distributions used in colorimetry. ISO/CIE 23603:2024 separately addresses the spectral quality of practical daylight simulators used for visual appraisal and colour measurement. Neither source means that a consumer lamp labelled 5000 K or 6500 K certifies a personal colour analysis. Correlated colour temperature alone does not describe spectral distribution, uniformity, intensity, glare or room reflections.

Document the actual setup: lamp or daylight source, position, distance, diffusion, surrounding surfaces and any important variation. Strongly coloured walls, curtains, the consultant’s clothing and glossy furniture can reflect colour towards the face. Prefer a matte neutral background, cover dominant surfaces and allow a short period of visual adaptation when the client arrives from markedly different lighting.

Use a matte neutral cape to reduce clothing interference. Hair can be held back when it dominates the facial frame, but record natural colour, current colour and the client’s intended style. Remove only accessories that the client is comfortable removing. Glasses may be set aside for an initial comparison and restored during the practical check; essential visual, hearing or comfort devices should never be treated as an obstacle.

If makeup is removed, use a suitable process and wait until rubbing, water or cleanser no longer creates temporary redness or shine. Do not try to neutralise freckles, grey hair, facial hair or natural pigmentation. Record tan, self-tan, temporary flushing, dyed hair and cosmetic changes as conditions of the session, not as client errors.

Inclusive preparation also means auditing the drape set. Light, medium and deep complexions need credible alternatives across value, chroma and colour direction. If the kit contains abundant pale muted options but few deep or highly chromatic samples, it cannot test every client fairly. That limitation belongs to the materials and must be stated rather than projected onto the person.

Before the client sits down, inspect every sample for cleanliness, odour, staining, fading, damaged edges, creasing, transparency and inconsistent sheen. Fabrics intended as a comparison pair should be similar in size, fall and surface. Satin reflects differently from matte cotton; a thin cloth allows the cape to influence it; deep folds create shadows. Replace samples that no longer represent the original set.

Organise the sequence in advance. Group balanced pairs, keep verification samples separate and use internal identifiers that do not reveal an expected result. Present the same side of each fabric. Clean and store the cape, headband and drapes according to material and manufacturer instructions, use clean barriers where appropriate, and do not spray fragrance or unsuitable products close to the client’s face.

A declared sequence reduces the temptation to change direction until the first impression appears confirmed. Begin with a neutral base to check light, posture and drape height. Use sufficiently different but balanced pairs to form broad hypotheses, isolate one dimension at a time, then finish with cross-checks. Schools may order dimensions differently; what matters is a reasoned sequence that can preserve weak, neutral and contradictory evidence.

Lift the upper drape in one continuous movement without brushing it across the face or leaving the neutral cape exposed for a long interval between A and B. Keep the upper edge at the same point beneath the chin. A closer, higher or wider cloth contributes more reflected colour and changes the test along with the intended variable.

Viewing time should also be comparable. A flash is difficult to observe; an extended pause increases adaptation and fatigue. Tell the client that the pair will be repeated, ask them to look at the face rather than select the prettiest fabric, and avoid commentary that suggests an answer. Personal preference is valuable information, but it is not the same record as a visible effect.

Observe before you interpret

During A–B–A, look at the relationship between fabric and face. Does the cloth become the first thing seen, or does it support the intended feature hierarchy? Do the eyes, lips and jaw remain legible? Do shadows change consistently on both sides? Is a cast localised to the area nearest the fabric? State where the change appears. ‘Better’ or ‘healthier’ is too vague and often turns taste into a claim.

If an effect appears only on the lamp side, investigate illumination. If it changes when a fold moves, investigate the surface. If A seems favoured when presented first but not when the order is reversed, record a possible sequence effect. Good observation keeps competing explanations visible instead of protecting the first label.

A session record should include date, purpose, client preparation, background, light source and position, drape identifiers, order, target variable, observations, interference and provisional conclusion. If you use a certainty scale, define it—for example stable, moderate, weak or not interpretable. Keep pairs that produced no meaningful difference; they prevent a weak dimension being presented as decisive.

In team settings, a second observer can write notes without signalling a verdict. Compare descriptions before labels. Disagreement is not settled by seniority: return to the pair, check conditions and ask which area and effect each person observed. A record turns disagreement into something that can be investigated.

Photographs and video document the test; they do not replace it

With separate consent, fix camera position, distance, framing, exposure and white balance. Disable beauty modes, filters and automatic adjustments that vary between frames. Photograph A and B in the same series and compare the files with the live scene before archiving them. A neutral reference can be useful only when it is used competently and does not obscure the face.

Check in order: lighting, reflections, client preparation, position, fabric texture, balance of the pair, fatigue and the question being asked. If uncertainty remains, return a useful range, a stronger priority or the need for another session. ‘Not interpretable under today’s conditions’ is more professional than a forced season. Remote draping and the limits of cameras and screens

A remote session can standardise instructions, background, distance, filter settings and a sequence of images with a reference. It cannot fully control the room light, phone processing, compression, colour profile, client display or analyst display. State that uncertainty plainly. A casual selfie is not equivalent to controlled live draping.

Remote work is more useful when it compares a consistent series, keeps claims broad and asks the client to verify hypotheses with real garments. If successive frames use different white balance or two screens show opposite relationships, do not compensate by eye. Repeat the capture or narrow the conclusion.

  • Treating filtered selfies or differently exposed images as comparable evidence.

A quarterly audit for your draping protocol

With appropriate permission, select one completed session each quarter and ask: was the lighting configuration documented; did each pair isolate its target well enough; were drapes intact and comparable; was presentation area consistent; were weak and contradictory results kept; could another trained professional understand how the conclusion was reached; and were privacy, dignity and the client’s preferences respected?

Then audit the kit itself.
